What I've learned about SEO

I've been working on this website thing for almost 2 weeks now, and after a complete redesign session last night, I think I finally have a decent site... But now I have to improve my search engine rankings, build link popularity and such...

Although I did get on the second page for "internet income system" without really doing much in the way of SEO, so I must be doing okay...


This tells me that

1. Content is still key!!! After all, I didn't use doorway pages, and my code isn't even that good... So now that I have what I assume must be pretty good content, I am going to optimize my pages by expanding to other keywords... Now, I'm not talking about creating doorway pages or anything like that. I'm also going to do this the hard way - manually - since I do not have hundreds of dollars to spend on SEO tools. If anyone has real experience with SEO programs such as SEO elite or Costa Dedes' system, I would really like to know... I am considering spending up to $100 on web promotion, and if I don't see relatively quick results for other keywords, I may have to break down and buy a product, but I don't want to get banned from the engines or waste money on an SEO tool that either does what I already did or creates pages that are great for search engines but worthless for users...

So, I'm learning a lot about SEO, I figured I'll share what I've learned - not the obvious H1 tags, Titles, last word on the page stuff, but the little things you don't hear about that are also important to SEO:

- Your code! That's right, clean up that HTML - or better yet, use CSS! CSS gives you a lot more freedom positioning things on your site, so you can put your content closer to the top of the page, and the spiders will eat up the right stuff first!

- Anchor text of the links TO your site! This is something that is very difficult to control, since you may not even know when someone is linking to you. Also, you might have to use your website address in links on forums or in articles. The only way I can think of to get around this is to do some hard work - build relationships with other webmasters and ask for specific anchor text in your links. Of coure, you should also allow other webmasters to choose their anchor text if you do this. You should also have a "link to us" button or link to create HTML links that webmasters can copy and paste, ensuring that the link will contain your anchor text. To be really successful in the search engines, you need keywords as anchor text linking to many of your pages, not just your homepage. Try writing articles related to a specific section of your site, so you can include a link to your inner page. This will take more work, especially if you have over 10 pages on your site, but with time the PageRank and search engine position of ALL of your pages will increase, not just your homepage!

- Image alt tags - use a logical description but incorporate your keywords...

- Here's a neat trick, and I'm pretty sure it won't get you banned:
- replace common words like the, a, an with images of the word and a keyword as
the alt text - this will help your keyword density without having to ruin your
content for visitors or rewrite tons of web copy...
- I would like to hear if anyone has had success with this technique and
whether it is worth using, so leave a comment if you know anything about it
